Broadband is referred to in telecommunications as being a signaling method that includes or handles a relatively wide range of frequencies, which may be divided into channels or frequency bins. Broadband is always a relative term, understood according to its context. Usually it is referred to Broadband in data transmission and can refer to broadband networks or broadband Internet. Data transmission may occur over a fiber optic cable and would be referred to as broadband as compared to a telephone modem operating at 56,000 bits per second. However, broadband in data communications is frequently used in a more technical sense to refer to data transmission where multiple pieces of data are sent simultaneously to increase the effective rate of transmission, regardless of data signaling rate. Broadband data transmission is usually delivered through various means, such as: DSL or digital subscriber line which uses the baseband voice channel on a single pair of wires or Optical fibre, a glass or plastic fiber that carries light along its length and has transmission rates which are usually higher than DSL connections. Nowadays mobile broadband is achieved thanks to various types of wireless high-speed internet access through a portable modem, telephone or other device. Various network standards may be used, such as GPRS, 3G, WiMAX, LTE UMTS/HSPA, EV-DO and some portable satellite-based systems.
